Hard Choices

Postby Jimenem » Sat Feb 18, 2006 10:56 pm

Choices are a part of every day life. . .what were some of the HARDEST choices you've had to make?

Martin Luther King, Jr.:
The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.

Paper or plastic and whether or not I want cheese on the burger?

White cotton underwear or snazzy lacey colors?

Should I have one more?

Nap or no?

Is my Oreo craving strong enough to actually get dressed, drive to the store and get them?

Leftovers for supper?

I'm sure. But there's not enough space on this board for me and seriousness.

So many of them...

My divorce. When I realized I had not laughed in over three years, I finally realized it wasn't me. Duh. I don't advocate divorce, but I don't recommend whirl-wind romances; or dating people on the rebound. I found myself scratching my head wondering 'what the heck?" I was just a (like a rental car, and I was the pink peg in his game of life). Soured Relationships take time to heal (a person needs to find out what went wrong in the first relationship, so you don't damage the next love match with baggage.

You know....taking just my life experiences alone. ..Couples who married, couples who broke up...I think that if I paid too much attention to possible heartache, I'd sit here alone for the rest of my life.

I'm hermity enough as it is. And being alone is something I've grown used to.

I have made some hard decisions in my life and I believe that those occasions I decided correct. Nevertheless now I am in a crossroads and really I do not know that road to take. :(

Oh, I agree. My sister is 12 years older than me, and I've seen her go through the boyfriends. They've all treated her badly, and I had to pick up the pieces last year when yet another bloke crapped on her.
My Mum has also had her fair share of unhappy relationships since I was born, and I've learnt a lot. I could easily say that I never want anything to do with men, because they are all complete pigs, but my Mum and my sister have proven that is untrue, as they are now both in happy relationships.
My tough decisions are still far into the future, like do I ever want to settle down with a bloke, and would I get married after all the stuff I have learnt from other people's failures...

I was saved from making the hardest decision I've ever faced.

As my father lay dying in the hospital, I had to drive to the airport to pick up my brother. When he came through the gate I said, "We have to hurry, I don't know if dad'll still be alive when we get there."

As it turned out. We each had some moments alone to talk to him, but it was a tragic setting, because they said his heart had stopped three times and he was in multi system organ failure. One drug they were using to help something was HARMING something else and he was swelled up to twice his normal size.

A week before, as he was in the little room being prepped for surgery, he had me sign his healthcare power of attorney. I thought nothing of it, at the time.

Fast forward a week:I decided that the next time his heart failed to beat, they should let him go. But I wanted to wait for my other brother who was driving back from 2 hours away, if we were discussing the turning off of machinery.

So my brother and I went downstairs to smoke. As we came back into Johns Hopkins we heard, "Would the family of Kay Kaiser please come to the Surgical Intensive Care Unit."

So, I started to run, and my brother grabbed me and said, "Don't run...what do you think they're going to tell us?"

His heart had stopped again and he was gone.

I went out to wait for my other brother and he arrived within ten minutes.
I think he read it on my face.

And I guess that, to this day, I am fortunate that I didn't have to make the decision.
