My life is funny. Is everyone's life funny?

Here is where you discuss everything under the sun, just keep it clean.

Today is my birthday (I'm not fishing for birthday wishes, so please refrain). My whole family treats my birthday as a nuisance. I get the "what time are you going to be home so I can drop off your present" phone calls on my birthday, everyone is sick to death of celebration by today. Although it does suck it is not devastating to me, it just is what it is. But I woke up this morning to find that the passing storm has:
Blown my back fence down.
Flooded my bedroom to the point that when I stepped out of bed I splashed on to the carpet (at least it wasn't cat barf)
And the power was out for over 5 hours.

Finally, the power is re-instated, I have patched up the fence as best as I can (considering), mopped up the water off the floor and settle down to log on to the computer so I can go to my happy place. I log on to JCO and get this message:

We would like to wish you congratulatons on reaching 44 years old today.

The Management

Never have been the words "congratulatons on reaching 44 years old" struck me as funny as they have today. So thanks for the laugh JCO!

Yuck...your birthday has sucked! That's not fair. Yet ANOTHER instance of proving that the universe has it out for us.

Oh boy...that was a statement in jest. Life isn't always what you make it. Some people seem to be blessed and some cursed.

I'm gonna disagree Quirks, so we'll have to agree to disagree......lol....
sure shit happens........it happens to us all........it's how you let it affect you that is the difference.......but it takes time to be able to reflect on stuff and say 'yeah i learnt something'..........i'm not saying it happens immediately.

Or we could dive even deeper and say that you are both right, because your opinions happen to fit each other.
Life is AND isn't what you make of it. If a seiries of uncontrollable events plague your life. . .sure you have the choice, to make of it what you will. But the fact that those events that took place were uncontrollable, suggests that you don't have any choice, they were "put there" to discourage you, or encourage you, or *insert any emotion here* you.
Letting a misfortune affect you. . . is a requrement. Those misfortunes are specifically designed to affect you. . .if you deny them that, or even think that you posess the ability to do so, then you must be a super human. Something that has affected you negatively, obviously was supposed to do so, and you have no controll on turning it into something positive, you only have the deciding factor on how long you're going to let it affect you.

The people that "seem to be blessed" are the people who are having what seems like better luck than you at the moment. But most people try to sugar coat their life so all seems well to the casual onlooker. In reality everyone is facing problems. Problems that contantly fluxuate between little and disaterous. You can only see what people want you to see. And it all depends on an individual person veiw of their own problem.

Theres a man who is about to loose his house, and a two year-old that has to get his hair cut, two drastically different problems, but both of equal magnitude to the individuals. So problems exist for everyone, haw they choose to interpret them is solely up to the individual. Curses Blessings all a matter of opinion.

i guess it's the old glass half empty glass half full debate...........
of course i appreciate that some people go through unbearable hardship...........what i am saying is that people who can turn around and reflect on the difficulties and look objectively at lessons learned and strengths revealed will not have suffered in vain...............they will have grown stronger......

but as Jinemem says it's a personal opinion.........

In all fairness, I wasn't complaining, just stating the obvious. I have this sick sense of laughing at misfortune which is not always perceived as politically correct. After the power was re-instated and I walked around the neighborhood, I realized I was the lucky one. Sure, it wasn't Katrina devistation, but there is massive pools of standing water, debris and rubble everywhere. We had over 5" of rain and over 60 MPH winds ravage our little community in a 8 hour period the night before so of course there would be problems to arise from that. Then I turned on the 6 O'Clock news and saw what happened to the rest of the county and thought my situation is just a skinned knee in a train wreck. I feel silly now for even whining about it.

Traditionally, my birthday has always been uneventful. Not because my family doesn't love me, it's just circumstantial. I have rescheduled my birthday plans with my Dad for this weekend. But the thing that cracked me up was the statement "congratulatons on reaching 44 years old today" because I have never heard that expression. I have heard "congrats for turning 44" but "reaching" made it seem to me like it was a great accomplishment to survive 44 years! And to me, that is funny!

Anyone who grew up with siblings and had to share the back seat of the car remembers "don't make me pull over".....and (drawing imaginary line)..."This is your side of the seat and THIS is your side of the seat. Stay on YOUR side of the seat,"

So then you'd play the finger worm game where you'd say, "Eegy eegy eegy eegy" while you inched a finger close to their territory.

Then you'd have the insult game. Mom and Dad said it's not nice to call names, but you got around that by just jumbling up consonants and vowels and creating custom make-believe insults and conveying your scorn with your eyes and tone of voice.

"You're a womper!"

"Well...yooou're a gibblespritz!"

"And you're also a "soofler!"

One day I randomly combined some vowels and consonants (d,l,i,d,o specifically....) and nearly caused a car accident....

Me : "I'm a soofler? A soofler? Well....YOU are a _ i __d o!!!!"

(sound of brakes)

My dad turned around and said "WHERE did you learn that word?"

I said, "I made it up!"

He said, "Well....never use that word again."

"Ok."
