Comedy kingpin Ernie Butler dies

Butler has the distinction of being the first to break Jim Carrey in Montreal. Carrey was the headliner for the inaugural Comedy Nest show.

"Even though Jim was only 18 at the time and just bopping around, we sensed immediately he was going to be a superstar," Butler once told The Gazette.

"He was primarily doing impressions and physical comedy, but anyone could see that he had all the tools necessary."
