Crazy ol' Buck bit the dust

Postby Twigggy » Sun Mar 26, 2006 2:22 pm

I went to the Crystal Palace four years ago and saw the bugger live, pretty entertaining--he has/had a car (I forget what kind) in the bar stuck against the wall that he won from Elvis in a poker came.

Singer.
My dad played his records often.
That must have been some card game.
We will miss a great entertainer.

He also has Hank William's White Cadillac in the Crystal Palace, is that the car he won in the poker game?

Buck Owens is a country music legend, Hee Haw aside. No one rocked as hard as Buck. I had the pleasure of seeing him play many times, once with Wanda Jackson who my friend's band acted as her back up band. They had us show up early to join Buck for dinner, it was beyond surreal. Apparently, Wanda Jackson (who was known in the 50's as the "female Elvis") had a fling with Buck back in the day. After a couple of cocktails they started reminiscing and it was getting a little awkward. But Buck treated all of us like family. I'll never forget that day.

I know he and Roy Clark are "a-pickin' and a-grinnin'" up there in the big sky now.

I have one of Bucks cds. My fave song is "Tiger by the tail"

@Carreydaway That is a cool story. BTW what happened To Wanda? She is one of my fave female country singers. I haven't heard anything about her in like 100 years tho.

I've got a tiger by the tail
It's plain to see
I won't be much when you get through with me
Well, I'm a losing weight and a turnin' mighty pale
Looks like I've got a tiger by the tail

Well, I thought the day I met you
You were meek as a lamb
Just the kind to make my dreams and plans
But now the pace we're livin'
Takes the wind from my sail
Looks like I've got a tiger by the tail

I've got a tiger by the tail
It's plain to see
I won't be much when you get through with me
Well, I'm a losing weight and a turnin' mighty pale
Looks like I've got a tiger by the tail

Every night you drag me where
The bright lights are found
There ain't no way to slow you down
I'm about as helpless as a leaf in a gale
And it looks like I've got a tiger by the tail

I've got a tiger by the tail
It's plain to see
I won't be much when you get through with me
Well, I'm a losing weight and a turnin' mighty pale
Looks like I've got a tiger by the tail

I love that song! And quirky, my Dad and I watched Hee Haw religiously! And I aint a-feerd to say it neether!

Wanda Jackson is still around, touring like a mad woman. My friend, Tony, forced her out of retirement. Her voice is still amazing! She still has the ring Elvis gave her and shows it off at every show (it's the one on her right hand in the second picture below). Her latest album is called, "I Remember Elvis" released this year. I love her! The first time I met her I was completely tongue tied. She gave me an autographed photo, which I still have. Now that I've been around her more I can actually talk to her like a normal person. She was so influential in my life, all I could do was stand there with my mouth agape... good first impression, eh?

Here's Wanda, in the 50's and present

I'm not sure. I think it was the bartender that told me about it. As I recall,
he said that Buck won it from Elvis. I think there was also a sign boasting
about how Buck won it from the King via a card game. But I may be wrong. That damn whiskey and beer will do strange things to your head.

We were big Hee Haw fans in my house when I was growning up

Where, oh where are you tonight?
Why did you leave me here all alone?
I searched the world over and I thought I found true love.
You met another and, (raspberrry sound fx) you was gone!
