Narragansett welcomed "Irene"
21 May 1999

According to articles by The Narragansett Times and The Providence Journal, filming of "Me, Myself and Irene" moved last Monday, 17th, to Great Island (Narragansett), a small beach community near Galilee. A summer cottage on Mollusk Drive, a dead-end street, was used as Charlie Baileygates' (Jim Carrey) house. In one of the scenes filmed on location during the week, Charlie hosts a barbecue at his home for his colleagues.

To avoid a reprise of the Jamestown chaos, the Narragansett police and a private security firm guarded the set, while a police boat was also said to keep the coast clear of boats coming too near.

Some of Charlie's "neighbors" were given production assistant status and helped keep people from using their property to photograph the house. Nearby residents were also issued passes by the film company to get past security when traveling to and from their homes, as two streets, Island Road and Mollusk Drive, were closed throughout filming, making the set virtually invisible to outsiders.

Besides Narragansett, other scenes were also shot in Newport this week by a helicopter flying over the Pell Bridge. According to the movie's publicist, stand-ins replaced the principal actors. Last Friday, and still in Newport, the filmmakers closed down all of Brenton Point and a large part of Ocean Drive, due to a sudden decision to make use of King's Beach for a newly added picnic scene.
