"Sonic 2" Races To Record $71 Million Debut
10 Apr 2022

By Tommy Pihl (Editor-in-Chief)

Jim Carrey's new movie "Sonic the Hedgehog 2" got the biggest ever opening weekend for a video game adaptation. With fantastic $71 million across three days from 4,232 theaters.

In February 2020, a month before theaters across the country shut down because of the growing COVID-19 crisis, the first Sonic movie opened to $58 million for the three day weekend on its way to becoming the top-grossing video game movie of all time domestically ($148 million).

Back in April 2022 for Sonic 2 overseas, where it opened in select markets ahead of its domestic launch, Sonic 2 grossed another $37 million from 53 markets for a foreign total of $70 million and $141 million globally.

"This is an outstanding opening," says David A. Gross, who runs the movie consulting firm Franchise Entertainment Research. "With solid reviews and very good audience scores, "Sonic" is going to have a strong run."

"Sonic the Hedgehog 2" cost $90 million.
