SNL Cold Open with Jim Carrey (10/17/20)
20 Oct 2020

By Lucas Allen (Web correspondent)

The next cold open for October 17th's Saturday Night Live focuses on the dueling town hall specials between President Trump on NBC and Joe Biden on ABC. During this 13-minute sketch, we go back and forth between these two differing sides that includes Alec Baldwin's Trump being a nuisance with Kate McKinnon's Savannah Guthrie. For the purpose of this site, let's simply focus on the Biden sections with Beck Bennett's George Stephanopoulos.

Upon entering the sketch, Biden starts off by going near the audience not knowing where he is because of the sunglasses he's wearing. Stephanopoulos tries his best to control Biden's overly nice guy behavior. When he's given the first audience question, Biden gets into his "story with a complicated math problem" about how his COVID response will be different.

Flipping back from Trump, Biden is still telling his story much to the shocked reaction of the audience. Even Stephanopoulos isn't sure how to handle it when Biden thinks he's answering God's question.

At one point, Biden imitates Mr. Rogers while singing "Won't You Be My Neighbor" with the audience. It's certainly a given that Carrey once played Mr. Rogers in an episode of In Living Color. Afterwards, Biden imitates famed painter Bob Ross painting those "happy little trees" for audience member Kenan Thompson. It would've been more fitting if it includes an appearance from one of Jim's Trump paintings.

With the final presidential debate on the horizon, it'll be interesting to see how the next cold open will play out.
