SNL Cold Open with Jim Carrey (10/10/20)
13 Oct 2020

By Lucas Allen (Web correspondent)

In his second stint as presidential candidate Joe Biden, Jim Carrey brings a horror movie twist to the vice-presidential debate.

October 10th's cold open on Saturday Night Live features Maya Rudolph's Kamala Harris taking on Beck Bennet's Mike Pence in the debate moderated by Kate McKinnon's Susan Page. During the debate, Biden is willing to teleport to warn everybody and uses a teleporter to try to get there. Using doctored footage from 1986's The Fly with Jeff Goldblum (a remake of the 1958 Vincent Price film), Joe goes into the teleporter not knowing a fly is also inside.

As expected especially coming from the SNL writers, the Biden fly lands on Pence's head and Pence doesn't even acknowledge it. But it goes further when the Biden fly becomes the Goldblum fly. Carrey even wears a different wig and glasses referencing dialogue from Jurassic Park plus the actor's commercials for Apartments.com.

The sketch ends on another dark comedy note when Kenan Thompson shows up on Pence's head as the late Herman Cain now reincarnated as a fly. Another piece of Carrey trivia worth noting is he starred with Goldblum in 1988's Earth Girls Are Easy, which co-starred Geena Davis who was also in 1986's The Fly.

Check out the sketch below:

Also, check out Jeff Goldblum in The Fly. It's the perfect horror film to watch this Halloween.
