Just wondered if anyone knows anything about this...

Post by thecablegal »

I currently work part time in a small Tesco store, 18 hours a week over 3 days.
I am hoping to move to Kent, in like, the next 2 weeks, and have applied for a transfer to 5 stores I KNOW have vacancies. I know, because for the past 2 days, I have been ringing every store in Kent, and asking them.

My boss has to sort out any internal moves, and I have a feeling he's not going to do anything about it. He told me today that he won't release me from the shop I'm in at the moment for 3 weeks, but a manager from another store, one I wish to transfer to, told me that he can't stop me from moving, as long as I serve a weeks notice.

Does anyone know who is right in all this? I'm hundreds of miles from my Mum at the moment, and I'm suffering quite badly with panic attacks. The move would be great for me, as I need a fresh start. 3 weeks is like an eternity when someone is suffering. What should I do?

I think it will all depend on your contract of employment. If you're only obliged to work a week's notice if you resign then I don't see why it should be any different for an internal transfer.
Do you know the exact procedures for an internal transfer? Is it all down to your current boss to implement it? I would perhaps ring HQ and ask to speak to personnel or something. Perhaps they can advise more or even help you move?
If you ever got a contract of employment when you started, dig it out and see what it says.

It is awful when you want to get out and you feel trapped. Try and think of the big picture and the future and try not to get too stuck in dark hole worrying about today/tomorrow.

There are techniques for coping with panic attacks. Find one that works for you and try to use it to help whenever they come on.

Good luck. :D

I've always had a problem working normal 8-5 working hours. I have a sleep disoder rendering me with what normal people call strange behavior. I'm a high powered machine in the middle of the night, mid day I'm a mess. That's why I have a home occupation. Then if I get sick I don't negatively impact my co-workers (Even with the Americans with Disabilities Act) Its still difficult to find accomodations, which is why an office environment is complicated. I have a problem detecting when the illness takes over. I'm much better now. It took almost 20 years to get the knowledge, treatment and triggers mastered. It took at least ten years to get the right diagnosis. You mentioned panic attacks, they would arise for what would seem like benign situations. Its was a puzzle. Sometimes changing jobs, citys, and careers is all a person needs to find bliss.

I would talk to the upper management (like your manager's manager) and make sure. You don't want to be out a job, so i'd make sure the transfer is done correctly on both ends.

around family for emotional support.
I stay up pretty late, I've always been like that, I'm ready to
rumble till about 4:00 a.m then sleep to till noon.
But I work afternoons and it's perfect for me.
Only not many people like me.
