Do You like foreign films? Anyone in particular?

Post by wonderbunny »

I love watching them, and used to rent them religeousy from the corner video store. He closed shop and I'm withdrawing. I venture to the library but I miss the owners personal touch and recommendations. One that really opened my eyes was the Chinese version of 'Mask' about a aging man who was a stage performer who neede an heir. Looks for an orphan. Mask was not related Jims version. The story was so poignant. I like foreign films. You learn so much about the culture. So if you can't travel, and don't have a passport. Its the next best thing.
Another was the Japanese movie 'Bath'; a story about a father who runs a bathhouse in a small village. Simple plots but the story is so interesting.

i adore them but they are mostly European movies...........particulary French movies...........they are so classy...........i loved all the 3 colours series......plus 'les amants du pont neuf' '27oC le Matin', Diva, Leon, Nikitta, .........they are just so stylishly classy, atmospheric and mood driven with a sense of reality........something that Hollywood tends to overlook in favour of glitz and facade.........
but i do love the quintessential British film too........the Merchant Ivory movies typify this........i love all the proper Englishness.......which being Scottish is very much a novelty............lol...........it's a pity we'll never see another Merchant Ivory movie but they were great in their day.........

I have to giggle about this, being American, we can be so ethnocentric in our thinking. 'Foreign Films', are even classified differently. But for someone of a different culture, they are not foreign at all, well duh. I still laugh at myself trying to adjust the volumn when the movie is in a different language but has English subtitles; like somehow I'll understand what the actor is saying.
