i love an expression they use down here in the south when they are going to say something maybe "not so nice" about someone or telling someone about what this person does that drives you batty.

ex: "bless her heart, she just wants things to be perfect but it makes me crazy!" or "bless her heart if her butt gets any bigger she won't be able to get in her SUV." or "bless your heart you didn't know that wearing white after labor day was a sure sign of being white trash." the list goes on and on....

you can use this anytime - at church, at a bar. it totally makes talking about someone ok - kinda like confession

actually there are a lot of scot descendents here so i would guess it may have started quite innocent in the beginning. i have a friend from edinburgh that says it all the time and it just doesn't have the same "impact" as the southern drawl of "wwweeeeell buh-lessss yer hart"

in my opinion, everything just sounds better with a scottish accent. i really loved it over there.

But I confess here. Sometimes it makes me a little annoyed. Last night, I used my fancy new dipper for the iced cream. Because it has the thingy that swipes the dipper, you squeeze it afterward and it looses the iced cream. I did not use THE DIPPER. The one she's had for 50 years. She's right, we didn't really need a new dipper....but it's a darn sight less messy than having a cup of warm water to dip the dipper in after every scoop. Plus, it's kind of fun to squeeze it. Oh, the POWER!

fluffy,
flew into london with a friend and then we drove N through nottingham and york eventually making it to edinburgh where we met up with a couple friends who showed us the town "local" style for a couple days. from there we drove to sterling (i loved this town great bed and breakfasts) then stayed at glengarry castle (lovely tucked away place) then drove on the west side of loch ness up to inverness then back down the same way staying at fort william and back to edinburgh for another day before taking the train back to london. whirlwind trip but i loved scotland. next time i want to see the north east and the islands off the west coast. any suggestions?

quirky, i know some people like that. why would you want a new fangled scooper when you already have one. it's not broken so why waste money and space

Because it has the flicker offer thingy. I wonder what she'd think of the little carpet sweeping robot. But she's got a point about life being simpler when she was young. Look at me, for instance, with my too much time at the computer instead of swinging off a tree into the Vermilion River.

The computer is so far off Maslow's Needs Heirarchy it's not funny.

Well, i would go for Perthshire........which is really pretty.......then up the A9 to Inverness............go hunt for "Nessie'.....then either up to Ullapool........or over to the Islands..........
But Perthshire to Inverness is a must...........and if you can squeeze Royal Deeside in you won't be dissapointed.............

If you are serious about coming over i'll dig out some info.....just give me a shout...............

thanks fluffy, i'll keep that offer open if you don't mind. i have another trip out to LA and then to my homeland of ND which takes care of most of my vacation this year but i want to go back there soon.

what i loved most was the lack of commercialism in even the most "touristy" areas. the nessie in the pond in inverness was pretty fun though and the bagpipers on prince's street. there's just something there that you feel in your soul. i felt that way in norway too (that's where my mom's family is from). maybe there is something to the reincarnation stuff???!??!!

quirky, that's funny but if maslow had a computer he wouldn't have come up with the hierarchy of needs

i felt that way in norway too

My ancestors were Swedish, but I didn't get a sense of calm in Sweden (people were cold) that I did in Norway. It is absolutely one of the most beautiful countries I have EVER seen. I think I would be happy there just fishing and enjoying the countryside to Grieg's music.

i haven't been to sweden but when my mom and i toured norway, we had such a great time. we are the scandanavian cliché - i have long blonde hair, my mom has sky blue eyes and we both have the high cheek bones, so people would just start speaking norwegian to us wherever we went. very friendly people and the cities are so incredibly clean.

if you ever go back, stay at the solstrand fiord hotel near Os. it overlooks the most beautiful fiord (rightfully named hotel  ) i just sat for hours looking at the water, envisioning giant viking ships coming back from a pillage and greeting my tall, sweaty norseman - ahhhh. we were there in late july so it stayed light until around 11. breathtaking. every country i have visited so far i have fallen in love with. i love to travel, now if i just didn't have this job thing and endless bank account.....

fluffy probably more believeable than my reincarnation is the possibility of spirits still inhabiting the places i went. i work in a building that really IS haunted and am far too familiar with that "feeling" that i am not alone.

I did a lot more thinking about this thread today. You know the saying, "God never gives you more than you can handle?" How do you explain people who snap like a twig then? I sometimes feel like God is close to giving me about as much as I can handle, like it's just this eternal test that's going to play out for the rest of my life.

The more I submit to God, the more of the old me he takes away. The girl with ambition and dreams and ideas and motivations. And less pain. I want HER back! She was great!

And God puts us where we need to be, I know that...but when does it get easier? Are we all destined to be Sisyphus and our rock is our religion of choice?

hmmmm, interesting. my thought is it's never more than you can handle because it makes you grow to the next level and if you do snap, that is YOUR next level. as long as we are breathing i think our goal is to learn and appreciate all that we have - whether it's health, wealth, nature -everything. that's where we differ from sisyphus (that, and he was in hades)

but God gave us free-will. he knows we're human and we have all those human urges (greed, envy, gluttony, etc). and expects us to fall - a lot. the only thing that you can do is try to live your life (you'll like this one) "as a photograph for God." i saw that somewhere and although it's pretty cliché, it did make me think. i partied a LOT in college and i thought "man, glad i didn't know that saying then" (or maybe it would have helped) but all those things i did then formed me into what i am today. so it's all in your path sweetie, God test your endurance to what you think will be your demise but then he may just send you a life preserver when you're not looking. he truly works in mysterious ways. :)
