Jim Carrey Honors Dick Van Dyke in Exclusive Clip
26 Dec 2025

By Tommy Pihl (Editor-in-Chief)

PBS’ American Masters is honoring one of entertainment’s greatest legends with Starring Dick Van Dyke, a new documentary that premiered on December 12, just ahead of Van Dyke's 100th birthday on December 13 — and for Jim Carrey fans, it includes a new exclusive clip featuring Jim himself paying tribute to the man who helped shape modern physical comedy.

The documentary chronicles Dick Van Dyke’s extraordinary career across nearly eight decades, from his early days as a radio DJ and nightclub performer to Broadway stardom in Bye Bye Birdie, television history with The Dick Van Dyke Show, and unforgettable film roles in Mary Poppins and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Along the way, it showcases rare footage and never-before-seen clips, alongside new interviews with Julie Andrews, Carol Burnett, Steve Martin, Martin Short, Ted Danson, Conan O’Brien and Jim Carrey.

In one of the documentary’s most insightful moments, Jim reflects on the iconic opening credits of The Dick Van Dyke Show, where Van Dyke famously trips over an ottoman before popping back up with a grin.

“As soon as I saw Dick Van Dyke tripping over the ottoman and getting up with a smile on his face, I was hooked, because I felt like that’s what Dick is here to say,” Jim observes in American Masters – Starring Dick Van Dyke. “It’s not a pratfall, it’s a metaphor. If you tumble, you’ve got to pop right up and laugh at yourself, because you’re ridiculous. We’re all ridiculous, and life is an absurd obstacle course of unforeseen ottomans.”

The quote perfectly captures why Van Dyke’s style resonated so deeply with Jim, whose own rubber-limbed performances clearly echo that same philosophy of movement, joy, and self-awareness. Fellow admirers in the film include Steve Martin, who gives Van Dyke “a likability factor of 10,” and Ted Danson, who praises his ability to do “all the human things, but in such an elegant way.” Archival footage also features Carl Reiner calling Van Dyke “the single most talented man that’s ever been in situation comedy.”

Directed by John Scheinfeld, Starring Dick Van Dyke celebrates not only the legend’s past but his remarkable longevity, including recent Emmy wins, appearances on The Masked Singer, and even dancing at 93 in Mary Poppins Returns. As Van Dyke reaches a century of life, the film makes clear that his message — fall down, get back up, and laugh — remains timeless.

For Jim Carrey fans, this new exclusive clip offers a rare and thoughtful glimpse into how one comedy icon sees another — and why Dick Van Dyke’s influence still matters today. The last public appearance of Jim Carrey and Dick Van Dyke together was at the Los Angeles premiere of HBO’s If You’re Not in the Obit, Eat Breakfast on May 17, 2017, in Beverly Hills, California. Notably, the two comedy icons were seated together inside the theater, making the moment especially memorable — a rare, quiet snapshot of two generations of physical comedy side by side.

Starring Dick Van Dyke premiered Friday, December 12 on PBS and the PBS App.
