I read somewhere that Dr. Jim Carrey will join the cast of "True Detective" on HBO. Too bad I don't have HBO.

There have not been news about that. Please post a source in the post from the site you read it at.

"True Detective" has been mentioned in articles with Jim Carrey the past year. That was after the skit in Saturday Night Live with the Lincoln Ad. Matthew McConaughey has been actor in the series.
