How can multiplication of a number (positive or negative) by itself result in a negative number ? Not possible according to me.

You're absolutely correct! You can't root out a negative number! You win the prize! Unless, of course, you factor out an "imaginary" factor of -1. Then you can. Then the answer is about 1.41421i... roughly.
