Wish granted. The tree was brought in and decorated. Nicky took to the piano again. The rancher chased a little cheer his wife's way with a some wine and an overdue dance or two. I snuck out through the maze of ornament boxes, and was soon off with Raine. I'm still a bit of a tenderfoot, or I may have walked on a night such as this. The air was crisp and clean and still. I went with Raine to the eastern edge of the ranch. A little farther than I tend to travel these days after what's happened. We climbed atop a bluff, and it was then that I heard an unfamiliar sound. It was a strange sort of music for these parts... like chimes only deeper and hauntingly beautiful. It must be coming from the farmer's lands... When I got back home, I tried to explain what I'd heard. Ma laughed and said, "Oh he's at those pipes again." (At least she's speaking to me now.) "Pipes?" "Bagpipes, dear, they've come from Scotland."

I went to the kitchen for a glass of milk, then negotiated the winding staircase to my room. Owen was waiting in a chair by the bed. He's sore with me for going out alone, and let me know it. I lit a candle on the dresser and sat on the bed beside him. We sat in silence for a while, then he took me by the hand...

Another day came and went til dinner rolled around again. We were all set fat and happy after another wonderful meal when Luke made an announcement... He's moving to Houston. He'd been squirreling money away for a stretch of land, and this morning went to the title office for the permits on his house, which he plans to go oversee himself. What he didn't tell us was that on the last cattle drive through Houston, he'd hopped down from his horse and one of his boots landed in a puddle. This was no ordinary puddle. This was black. This was oil. He kept mum on his find, and had made a sidetrip to the bank and title offices then to secure his rights to it. Smart move. Smart man.

Well, it had to happen... "Luke's just not a farmer, Owen,"

or a rancher. But he'll make a damn fine oil man.
(You dragged him in, Fluffy, I might as well make it worth his while. )

Ok sorry my bad... Star Wars generation. ...And I still haven't been able to see 'Giant.' It's not on DVD.

Although I did find the only James Dean movie at the rental store I go to...'Rebel W/O a Cause."

ME?! What's he want? (Careful how you dress him, he might hunt you down...) Hold on, Nicky, don't get too far ahead. It's not even Christmas yet. He'll be around for Christmas, a few days visit at least...and he won't be drilling til the ground softens a bit...probably won't mention the find til his first pay...

Lukes always had a soft spot for you, and now he's a rich and wealthy oil tycoon he's ready to give you the lifestyle he's always dreamt of....He took you by the hand and walked you around the garden outside whilst i made you tea and crumpets.

Before he had a chance to declare his feelings Owen arrived and slipped his arm around your waist then shook his brothers hand warmly.
After all Owen had good news to share......he was engaged....to you!
