A Surge in "Snicket!"
20 Feb 2003

By BCDavis (JCO Editor-In-Chief)

Okay, folks, you can all take a great big sigh of relief and exhale your held breaths. Now that DreamWorks has taken over primary creative control, "Lemony Snicket" is moving forward again. (Whew!)

Brad Silberling has been picked by DreakmWorks to replace Barry Sonnenfeld (who was given the ax) to direct the "in hell" pre-production film. His helming credits include "Moonlight Mile," "City of Angels," and the ghostly popular children's live-action adaptation of "Casper" (for which he was hand-picked by Steven Spielberg himself). Ironically enough, he was runner-up in directing "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone." Jim Carrey must be happy, because he's still set to star as the wonderfully evil Count Olaf.

Two new producers from DreamWorks have joined the "over the line" line-up to replace Scott Rudin (who exited his place due to budget woes). Walter Parkes and Laurie MacDonald join Albie Hecht and Julia Pistor (of Nickelodeon Films) to produce the film.

While those unimportant little things called "particulars" still have to be ironed out, "Lemony Snicket" is set to start production in Los Angeles in October of this year (2003), and has a release date of Christmas, 2004 set. Paramount will have domestic (that's United States) distribution rights to the film, while DreamWorks gets to handle the over-seas distribution.

Everybody stand up and cheer! Thank you DreamWorks!
