"Man On The Moon" shoot starts
08 Aug 1998

Shooting began on L.A. Monday, July 27th and already - faithful to the movie's subject - misinformation seems to run wild.

According to the Holywood Reporter, Jim Carrey is said to have arrived on the first day of shooting dressed as an ice cream man - truck and all - proceeding to offer ice creams to the crew.

It was also reported that Carrey has allegedly requested two trailers on the set - one for "Andy Kaufman" and one for "Tony Clifton", Kaufman's obnoxious lounge singer persona. This request isn't a surprise to anyone who's familiar with Andy Kaufman and his almost schizophrenic insistency that Clifton wasn't him. Clifton's true identity - or identities - is probably Kaufman's most famous, and still intriguing joke. Carrey is said to have asked the crew to call him Tony during the first week of shooting even when he wasn't in front of the camera.

According to the Daily Variety, several of the "Taxi" stars, namely Judd Hirsch, Marilu Henner, Jeff Conaway, and Carol Kane will play themselves in the film. Tony Danza, decided not to appear on the movie due to being currently starring in Arthur Miller's "A View From the Bridge". Some of Kaufman's relatives may also have walk-on roles on the movie.

The Andy Kaufman Home Page also reported that several "Tony Cliftons" were seen on the Universal lot Thursday, July 30th and that R.E.M. is said to be in negotiations with Universal/Jersey Films, to write the movie's score.
