"Man On The Moon" update
12 Jul 1998

More news on the Andy Kaufman biopic, "Man On The Moon". The movie, produced by Universal-based Jersey Films and directed by Milos Forman, is set to start filming July 27th on New York and also Los Angeles, where The Shapiro-West office is being duplicated for the picture.

The supporting cast is formed by Danny DeVito, who will play George Shapiro, Kaufman’s manager, Paul Giamatti as Kaufman’s closest friend, Bob Zmuda and Courtney Love as Andy’s girlfriend, Lynne Margulies. Professional wrestler Jerry "The King" Lawler will play himself.

The screenwriters, Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski stated that writing the script was a challenge. According to Alexander, "This was a guy who wasn't happy unless he was challenging all perceptions of reality around him," while Karaszewski added "Andy didn't really consider himself a comedian. His routines weren't about jokes. He just wanted to bend reality. When he died, people poked the body to make sure he was dead. This was the hardest thing we ever did, by far. We initially rejected the idea, because Andy's life was all disinformation. It was a hellish experience trying to make sense of him."
