Christmas cheer for Carrey
16 Nov 2009

By Tommy Pihl (JCO Editor-In-Chief)

The actual box office numbers are in. Last weekend's domestic champion, "A Christmas Carol", slipped to no. 2 with $22,308,913, taking the 10-day haul for Walt Disney's animated Dickens adaptation to $63.3 million. The film lost just 26% of its audience from its somewhat underwhelming opening last weekend. Big films typically can drop 50% or more in the second weekend, but the strong hold for "Disney's A Christmas Carol" indicates it could have a long shelf life through the holidays!

The movie earned $16 million internationally from 3,229 screens in 21 territories to raise the tally to an early $34.0 million. 3D screenings accounted for more than 60% of weekend business on less than 40% of available screens. The family film opened top in Japan on $3.1 million from 375 screens and debuted in Spain on $2.4 million from 440 screens.
It added $4.2 million in the UK from 641 screens for $9.1 million to rank second behind 2012. Roughly 75% of business came from 3D screens. In Mexico, a further $1.4 million from 622 screens pushed the tally to $4.1 million.
