"A Christmas Carol" No. 1 at the box office
09 Nov 2009

By Tommy Pihl (JCO Editor-In-Chief)

The actual numbers are in for the weekend box office of November 6-8, 2009. That was good news for Jim Carrey's new motion capture "Disney's A Christmas Carol" which took the number 1 spot grossing $30.1 million. The big-budget movie (reportedly $175 million) grossed that from around 6,500 screens at 3,683 sites. Time will tell if it can earn back its budget, but it will need good results in the weeks ahead!

The previous motion capture Christmas movie from director Robert Zemeckis "The Polar Express" grossed $23.3 million over three days and $30.6 million over five days. With the positive user comments about "A Christmas Carol" lately it looks promising for the Carrey's new movie.

Early reports says that 70 percent of its gross came from its 2,045 3D presentations including 181 IMAX 3D screens.

Other big Christmas movies like "How the Grinch Stole Christmas", "Elf" and "The Polar Express" usually have good legs and reach totals five to six times their opening weekend. That will give the movie between $150-190 million at the box office. Yea, I think we have a new big Jim Carrey hit in the theaters!

Box Office Top 5:
1) A Christmas Carol - 30,051,075
2) Michael Jackson's This Is It - $13,157,944
3) The Men Who Stare at Goats - $12,706,654
4) The Fourth Kind - $12,231,160
5) Paranormal Activity - $8,278,605
