"Yes Man" - the Story begins to unwind
09 Jan 2008

By Nicola West (Editor/Writer (UK))

As a big Danny Wallace fan I was interested to see how the movie would differ from the book. He had assured me the essence of the book was still intact but how would an essentially British tale transfer to an American setting?

Gone is Danny, BBC producer, writer, recently dumped and depressed, enter Carl Allen, bored insurance Clerk on the hamster wheel of life.

Gone is the weird bloke on the bus who tells Danny to 'Say Yes More', enter a self help course teaching folk to say yes to every opportunity.

Gone are Danny's love interests. Hanne and Lizzie have been replaced by actress 'Renee Aniston' (Zooey Deschanel) who Carl can't say no to. Falling for her in a big way he see's glimpses of the old 'Carl' but an arguement finds Carl missing her and questioning the teachings of 'Yes'.

Yes Man

The twist finds the teachings are an elaborate hoax, one that Carl fell for but equally one that helped him rediscover himself and he gets back together with Renee a changed man.

Danny's hoax was set up by his ex girlfriend Hanne and the book is less about a broad message concentrating more on Danny's experiences. Overall though i agree with Danny, the essence of "Yes Man" is there.

Roll on December 19th.
